B E A U T Y / 'Stories Cosmetics

Image
You might have already heard that &OtherStories is opening a store in Amsterdam this fall on Heiligeweg. What might still be a little underrated about them is their cosmetics department. It is great. There is just so much effort in it; from the scents to the colors matching their clothes and don't get me started on the graphic design on their packaging, I love the simplicity of it. Another great thing is that they take some responsibility for the environment; most of the packaging is fully recyclable and if you bring back your empty make up/skincare packaging to the store, you get a 10% discount off your next beauty purchase. When visiting them in Stockholm last October for the Co-Creatives project, I got a box filled with their skin care products. These are my three favorites, very happy about having them available closer to home soon. / Moir Anti stress serum My favorite thing about it is its fresh, unisex, clean laundry type of smell. Has a really smooth consisten...

W E A R I N G / Last Year In London

Image
A time when everyone just happens to be in the same place at the same time. And everyone tries to cram in as many meetings, appointments, shows and events as possible in only a few days. That's fashion week. The schedules of the shows have just been released and the planning has begun. I'm planning to keep it calm, I've never been a fan of the madness and always only go to the events of the people and brands that I love. Nonetheless, it still takes quite some emailing, calling to make it all work. While I'll spend my day puzzling away with the agenda, here's are some pictures from last year, February 2013 at London Fashion week taken by Claudiu Berechet for an interview with Stylefan . bomber: Filippa K trousers: H&M nose piece: Maison Margiela dress worn as top: American Apparel

N O V E L T Y / Jef Montes Ritualistic First Show 'Illuminosa'

Image
Attending the Jef Montes show at Vodafone Firsts Fashion Lab was like attending a ritual from another planet. The image of a burning communion candle appears behind the runway. The first girl comes out, holding two blue tubes in her hands like candles and steadily walks down the runway to a slow beat. Halfway she suddenly, yet slowly turns around the tubes and blue ink starts pouring out over her chest, staining the white gauze dress and leaving a blood like trail behind on the runway (see video !). The following models step through the ink, staining the bottom of their gowns and shoes and spreading the blue fluid. Dripping wet hair and bleached brows. The blue fiberglass pieces are so shiny and smooth in the way they move that they seem liquid. The references to traditional catholicism and this high tech futuristic outcome. Hearing Jef explain all his hard work and thoughts behind it personally (little details like; embroideries are on the left side because that's wh...

D I Y / Two Way Minimalistic Pouch

Image
The instagram mers among us already know that last week I've been making little paper samples of pouches and bags. Products that allow different interpretations are always my favorites, and so was this simplistic idea for a bag. You can actually wear this clutch/pouch three ways; with your hand through the slit, holding the pouch like on picture two and the third; putting your arm through it like a sleeve. / 1. The pattern of this little bag is extremely simple, by looking at the images I'm sure you'll figure it out. Decide how large you want the clutch to be. Mutliply the height of the clutch times 3, this will be the length of your pattern. Add 5 cm more cm to this length to give extra space to for the overlapping flap. Add 10 cm (5cm on each side) to the width of your clutch. Then cut off 5 cm from each side for the first two thirds of this length on both sides. It should now look like image number four. / 2. You'll pattern consists of two parts; the narrow lo...

W E A R I N G / Cut-Off Trousers = New Opportunities

Image
Quite a chunk has been chopped off my recently thrifted trousers ( before ). The fact that a pair of perfectly fitting trousers is such a rare thing, had me doubting to work them with my scissors. Yesterday I finally trimmed off about about 20cm. Their new length creates a completely different silhouette and a lot of footwear-sock-layering opportunities. In all honesty, I was wearing my air max with these socks instead of these sandals. But you can count on it, when spring comes I'll be flip-flopping all over the place. trousers: thrifted sweatshirt: T by Alexander Wang (on sale here ) socks: Asos sandals: DIY

N O V E L T Y / Amsterdam Fashion Week Tickets Giveaway

Image
/ Most anticipated Jef Montes' show is what I am most excited about during the entire Amsterdam Fashion Week. Ever since I saw his impressive work first come down the runway at the Artez 2012 graduation show, where these pictures were taken, I've been a huge fan. It is amazing how Jef approaches materials in a high tech way and how he translates inspiration coming from gothic architecture into modern silhouettes on bodies. Jef tells me that his graduation pieces were only a blue print of many more ideas. He even gave a little clue about his upcoming collection; to take the wet look of the fiberglass dresses very literally and that it will be all about light. I can not wait! / Two Tickets To Give Away I'm beyond excited to meet some of my readers give away tickets for you guys to join me during Vodafone's Fashion Lab at AFW. Jef Montes will be presenting his collection at the Vodafone Firsts Fashion Lab; a cool initiative for new talent to showcase on a pro...

B E A U T Y / Spot On Nails

Image
Who has time for long complicated manicures? A dot on the moon and one on the tip of the nail with a nail pen and you're pretty much done. I applied it only to my index and middle finger and painted the rest of the nails solid white. It is amazing how two tiny dots opposite to each other can create such a visually graphic, balanced and elongating effect. nail polishes: Hema

L I F E / GET SHIT DONE Calendar

Image
To continue last year's tradition, I'm sharing my home made calendar again for all of you to download. I'm not a graphic designer, merely a lover of graphic shapes and typography, especially a fan of the slash as you can see. The calendar is timeless and universal, you can apply it to every month and year, just write the number of the month behind the large slash and the number of the day behind the small slashes corresponding with the days of the week. I'm wishing you all have an overflow of creativity and productivity with the three magical words 'get shit done'. Let's own 2014! Click to download the calendar

W E A R I N G / Lazy Weekend Attire

Image
One of those stay at home Saturdays, when it doesn't really matter what you wear, heating is on and there are no weather-related wardrobe requirements. Might as well wear that impossible dress that never gets to see any daylight. Made this piece for NYE, but can't think of another occasion to wear it again before summer yet I love it so much. It is exactly the dress that I always hope to find when thrifting; one that might have a history of 1995 cocktail parties. Unfortunately I haven't found that fantasy yet, so I had to make it myself. Though it looks like the simplest design it must have been the most confusing dress that I've ever made; Folded the thin white fabric twice horizontally and vertically, making some cutouts and stitches, folding it back the other way around to finally make it come together by adding a leather string. Dressed it down with an oversized hoodie and a pair of trainers and no mascara, though coincidentally these are all elements of the the ...

A C C E S S O R I E S / Simplified Rose-Gold Ring

Image
A promise I had made to myself -to invest in high quality jewelry- was what stopped me from buying this ring for a couple of months. Though I couldn't bare it being sold out. The lovely simplified design and the material; a light grey 'stone' combined with my favorite metal color rose gold won me over, I finally decided to get it and break my promise. I could have foreseen someone tripping over my display columns when I placed them on the floor (it looked so nice though!). They got damaged but I actually do not mind at all and think they've even improved by this little accident. Love how these white cuboids mini buildings have gained more character and rawness. ring: Whistles display columns: DIY

W E A R I N G / Miniature

What the kid was wearing yesterday was way more interesting than my comfy Sunday attire. Lois' new monochromatic Air Max trainers looked fantastic with her silk column dress I made for her earlier. Dress: made by mama Trainers: Nike Air Max 90 ( your size )
